HLTHPS006 Assist clients with medication

This unit explores the skills and knowledge required to prepare for and provide medication assistance, even for clients who will self-administer their medication. We will also look at how to follow workplace procedures on medication administration, minimise risk of infection, and complete necessary administrative documentation.

- During the face-to-face session you will be required to demonstrate all practical requirements of the course.

Course Details

Key Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, students will be able to:

> provide assistance with medication

- to at least 5 different clients according to their care plans

- with at least 5 different types of medications

- used at least 3 different modes of administration

> consistently adhere to procedures and regulatory requirements for assisting with medication, including:

- check the care plan and confirming details

- check medication, including expiry dates and dosage instructions

- confirm client identity

- calculate correct dosage

- conduct pre and post administration client checks

- clean equipment and disposed and stored medications according to organisation - procedures completed accurate documentation

Units of Competency

On successful completion of this course, students will be eligible for a Statement of Attainment (SOA) for:

> HLTHPS006 Assist clients with medication

An SOA will be issued by Skills Network Australia Ltd within 30 days of completion of the course, provided all USI, fees and charges have been finalised.

The units of competency listed above are current on the National Register of VET at the time of publication.

Prerequisites

There are no pre-requisites for this course.

Course Requirements

Foundation skills are the underpinning communication skills required for participation in the workplace, the community and in adult education and training.

Numeracy – to calculate and check correct dosage of medication, expiry dates and client information. This includes basic calculations of ratios and volume.

Reading – to correctly check and interpret client information and dosage instructions.

The remaining foundation skills essential to performance are explicit in the performance criteria of this unit of competency.

You will require an internet capable smartphone or tablet to complete online components of the course.

All other training and assessment materials and equipment will be supplied throughout the course. Students should wear comfortable, casual clothing.

Delivery Modes

2 hours of detailed online training plus up to 6 hours in-person practical assessment.

Training and assessment can be adjusted to account for specific workplace requirements and the existing skills and knowledge of the students

Renewal

There is no industry standard recommended renewal date. Please consult with your workplace procedures and policies regarding certificate renewal.

Fees and Payments

This course is offered and delivered by Ingleside College on behalf of Skills Network Australia Pty Ltd. The course fee will be paid direct to Ingleside College.

This course may be arranged by an employer who can be invoiced for the training. If the student is booking direct, training fees must be paid by the student directly to Ingleside College. Course fees and payment terms will be communicated to the booking party (employer or student) prior to enrolment.

In the event a course is cancelled, or the services are otherwise unable to be delivered, a full refund will be provided to the booking party.

This course

- does not involve any work placement arrangements,

- does not enable students to obtain a licensed or regulated outcome, and is not associated with any VET FEE-HELP,

- government funded subsidy or other financial support arrangements.
